After studying at Durham University and Magdalen College Oxford, Ben trained as a director at the National Theatre with Sir Peter Hall, at the Young Vic with David Lan and at the Caird Company with John Caird. He subsequently trained as an actor at Drama Centre London.
Prior to joining BADA in 2023, Ben was Senior Lecturer in Acting and Course Leader of MA Classical Acting at Central. He has also taught at conservatoires, studios and theatres in the USA, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Aotearoa/New Zealand and Israel, and at LAMDA, Cambridge University and Kingston University. Productions as a director include Terrore e Miseria del Terzo Reich (Milan), Romeo and Juliet and Othello for the first two seasons of Pop-up Globe in Aotearoa/NZ and Australia, and UK productions of Blood Wedding, In Hell (after Gorky), Hamlet, Cymbeline, The Rover, The Devils, Mary Stuart, The Suicide, As You Like It, The Broken Heart, Three Sisters, Antony and Cleopatra, The Winter’s Tale, Much Ado About Nothing, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, Macbeth and Dr Faustus.
Ben has written and curated four original translation/adaptations of classic plays, numerous essays about Shakespeare and actor training, and has worked as a script consultant on projects as varied as Robert Icke’s play The Doctor and Shakespeare animations for toddlers.
