Empower the Future
of Theatre: Support
BADA Today

Why Support BADA

BADA exists to inspire the next generation of storytellers.

The best theatre tells stories which help us understand our world. These stories hold up a mirror to society, ask difficult questions, and invite us to engage with difference. Theatre also brings a company of people together in a shared artistic endeavour, combining their different perspectives and talents to create something bigger than themselves.

Theatre traditions therefore have a critical role to play, both in creating art that challenges and inspires, and in giving people the tools to change the world – in every job and every sector. Never has this been more important in the face of polarisation and uncertainty in society, where creative thinking and valuing difference are critical to building a more equal world.

Empowering Emerging Artists

Our mission is to immerse some of the most talented students from the United States and around the world in the rare and distinctive traditions of British and European theatre.

British theatre is often perceived as the pinnacle, steeped in history and quality.

By exposing future generations of students to this richness, we can give them the grounding to forge careers in the upper reaches of the arts, and the skills, resilience and confidence to carry with them into their careers and lives.

It is imperative that theatre is open and available to everybody, including people from historically under-represented groups. The same must be true for the opportunities we provide. Our priority therefore is to provide more scholarships for students who may otherwise struggle to pay their way, so tomorrow’s storytellers can come to the UK and be transformed.

Enhancing Cultural Exchange

Founded in 1984, the British American Drama Academy is the only drama school in the United Kingdom specifically created to immerse students from the United States in the traditions of European theatre and the training of the British conservatoire. Our intensive short courses and our rigorous semester-long programme offer training in technique and forge strong cross-cultural connections.

Our Distinctive Approach: Excellence, Diversity, Care

Over 40 years, we have developed a distinctive methodology, combining the breadth, depth and rigour of a world-class theatre academy with personal care for each student.

Help support our Plan: Breaking down financial barriers

We have a proven model. At BADA, we know how to provide the very best British theatre training through the very best practitioners to the very best students.

Representation in theatre, TV and film, and across society, is a critical issue. We need storytellers from diverse backgrounds to bring their experiences and reach new audiences. We know that British theatre has a role to play here, with its global reputation as the pinnacle of the profession.

Yet American study abroad programmes carry significant financial barriers. The very students who would benefit most are prevented from participating.

We now stand ready to play our part in nurturing the next generation of talent from under-represented groups. We have an opportunity to open up our intensive conservatoire training to students who would otherwise struggle to pay their way.

Why I Support

“The lessons I learned at BADA became the foundation of my future career. I got a peek behind the curtain – working with Maria Aitken, Billie Whitelaw, and Brian Cox. But most of all, I found community with others who have a passion for text and craft and honesty on stage. When I see someone at auditions with BADA on their resume, I know they share those values and skills. BADA is a one-of-a-kind experience. I urge you to donate, if you can, and pay it forward for the next generation of inspirational theatre artists.”

Impact

The beauty in the rigor of the program is not only that it demands the best of you: artistically, physically, mentally, and emotionally, but it also pushes you past what you thought your limits were and reveals new areas of power you never knew existed within yourself.

Impact

While at BADA, I was afforded priceless experiences. Ones that gave me the opportunity to attend numerous master classes with incredible veterans of the stage and film…. My teachers’ influence, guidance and real life experience grounded me on my own path to explore the craft of acting.

Impact

BADA has taught me a lot of things, but one thing that I’ll always be grateful for is the space they allowed me to push myself beyond myself. BADA challenged me to take on roles that I’ve never thought I could do; they challenged me to see beyond my “type”; but, most importantly, they challenged me to be a better student and artist.

Impact

The Summer I spent in BADA’s program at Oxford University was one of the most memorable and illuminating experiences of my life. It was amazing  to work with Rosemary Harris on Shakespeare and Brian Cox on Chekhov. Any young actor who has the opportunity to attend Midsummer in Oxford should grab it.

Impact

My professors at BADA challenged me to take risks in my acting, and I learned that it is better to try and fail than never push yourself. Some of my proudest performances at BADA have been when I set aside all my fears and doubts and trusted myself.

Daphne Gomez London Theatre Program Yearlong '17 – '18

Impact

My time at BADA was an integral part of my life as an actor, creator, and human being. I learned that it was not only normal to fail but necessary. The classroom was a place to grow and to be nurtured. To be challenged and to be celebrated. The relationships I created with faculty and fellow students are ones that I will carry with me forever.

Impact

BADA provided me with a safe home where I could try, fail, try again, and potentially succeed. I learned so much as an actor, including discipline, stamina, and support. As a young adult, I learned more about independence, courage, and responsibility.

Impact

“There will never be enough words to explain how much my life has truly transformed since my experiences through BADA: to be able to walk into a room and hold space for myself because BADA held space for me to explore all the different facets of who I am.”

The British American Drama Academy celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024 and continues to educate students from the United States and around the world.

We now seek support from friends and supporters who share our vision for our future storytellers.

With your support, students from all backgrounds will have the chance to “see” what they can be, find their talent, and discover opportunities and career paths that they may have otherwise thought out of reach. They will bring their experiences to their careers and carry their love of theatre with them for the rest of their lives. They will go back to the US as rounded, resilient young people, with minds opened and perspectives changed.

They will be the future generations who will tell stories for us all.
