After obtaining a MA honours degree specialising in theatre texts from Edinburgh University, James trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After seasons in Rep and at the RSC, he joined Shakespeare’s Globe under the artistic directorship of Mark Rylance, since which time he has appeared in over 20 productions in both houses, playing various parts from Pericles to Parolles, Caliban to Claudius, Autoycus to Audrey, and Mercutio to Macbeth. Now a Globe Associate Artist he is also a member of their Higher Education faculty,  for whom he has taught acting, directing and design students from the UK and abroad. Aside from further acting work, in both classical and new writing at the RSC, the Old Vic, the West End and elsewhere (alongside various roles on Radio, Film and Television), James regularly works as a Masterclass Leader for both the Samling Institute for Young Artists and the Verbier International Festival Academy, working with classical opera and repertoire singers graduating from leading international conservatoires.
