This workshop introduces intimacy for the stage, focusing on how actors can work safely and respectfully with scene partners in a professional setting. Through discussion and active exercises, we will explore consent, communication and the basics of intimacy choreography. Active exercises will respect individual boundaries, meaningparticipants can choose to join in with some, limited or no physical contact with others, or opt to learn by observation only. Please bring questions you have or situations you have experienced for discussion with the group.
Dress as you would for an acting rehearsal and bring one item of clothing to add like a button up shirt, sweater or coat. We might use that in choreography.
Doug Scholz-Carlson is a director, fight choreographer, and the first intimacy director at the Metropolitan Opera for productions including Grounded. Fire Shut Up in my Bones, Dead Man Walking, Medea, Hamlet, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Rosenkavalier. Doug is the Artistic Director of Great River Shakespeare Festival and stage director for companies including Minnesota Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Austin Opera, Kansas City Lyric Opera, Portland Opera, Madison Opera, and Palm Beach Opera. Other Intimacy direction includes work with Minnesota Opera, San Diego Opera, San Antonio Opera and the Guthrie Theater. and teaching workshops including the Opera America national conference, Julliard, Lindemann Young Artist Program and Minnesota Opera. Doug studied intimacy direction with teachers including Tonia Sina, Alicia Rodis, Claire Warden, Dan Granke and Jessica Steinrock.
